INDIANAPOLIS -- The sheriff of Brown County, Ohio, and commanding general of the 38th Infantry Division was promoted to major general today.
Maj. Gen. Gordon L. Ellis, also a resident of Brown County received his two-star rank during a ceremony at the division’s armory, and he addressed the division soldiers, VIPs and guests during his speech.
“I will never forget that I stand here today to a great extent based on your labor, your effort and your sacrifice,” said Ellis.
Ellis leads the 38th by focusing on the development of the agility, adaptiveness, proficiency and lethalness of its approximately 8,000 citizen-soldiers while continuing to contribute to the division’s history of achievements.
Ellis has served in the Army National Guard for more than 30 years and has three overseas deployments in support of Kosovo in 2004 to 2005, Kuwait and Iraq in 2008 and Afghanistan in 2012.
“I do not forget the responsibility I have to not only lead well but always be mindful that training and decision relate directly to the level risk to be faced either on mission or in training,” said Ellis. “I understand that without soldiers, there is no need for leaders.”
The 38th Infantry Division is one of 18 Army divisions and one of eight National Guard divisions in the United States’ arsenal..
Ellis and his wife, Jenny, reside in Lake Waynoka, Ohio. Together they have four adult children and one grandchild.
