Rear Adm. Donald Gabrielson relieved Rear Adm. Gregory Harris as Commander, Carrier Strike Group 11, during a ceremony held onboard Naval Station Everett, June 28.

The change of command ceremony is a time-honored naval tradition wherein responsibility and authority is immediately passed from one to another in front of assembled Sailors assigned to the command.

Rear Adm. Harris, a native of Yarmouth, Maine, is a 1987 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He was designated a naval flight officer in 1989 and naval aviator in 1993. He took command of CSG-11 during their 2017 deployment to the 5th and 7th fleet areas of responsibility.

“It was incredible being able to work with the men and women of CSG-11,” said Harris. “I love these guys. They’ve done everything I’ve ever asked of them, and I thank them for all of it.”

A surface warfare officer, Gabrielson’s sea tours include frigates, littoral combat ships, destroyers and cruisers, deploying five times to the Middle East, along with operations across the Western Pacific, Atlantic, Mediterranean, Arctic and Baltic regions. He commanded USS Cape St. George (CG 71) and USS Freedom (LCS 1). Ashore, he served as executive assistant to Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, as aide to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations and as an operations research analyst in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He also served as a liaison to the U.S. Congress in both the Secretary of the Navy's Office of Legislative Affairs and the Joint Staff.

“It’s an incredible honor to assume command of Carrier Strike Group 11 after such a talented leader as Adm. Harris,” said Gabrielson. “I look forward to working together with the fantastic people that are here as we prepare for the next round of deployments and the operational life of the ship.”

CSG-11 is currently undergoing its maintenance phase, which includes a docking planned incremental availability on its flagship, USS Nimitz (CVN 68), in preparation for future deployments.

“Adm. Gabrielson is just the right guy to bring in to lead warrior team 11 through the next challenge of getting Nimitz out of the yards into workups and onto cruise,” said Harris. “CSG-11 is full of great warfare commanders, and I’m excited to see them move forward.”

CSG-11 is stationed in Everett, and is comprised of Carrier Air Wing 11, Nimitz, the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers USS Lake Erie (CG 70) and USS Princeton (CG 59), and the Arleigh Burk-class guided-missile destroyers USS Howard (DDG 83), USS Shoup (DDG 86), USS Chafee (DDG 90), USS Pinckney (DDG 91), and USS Kidd (DDG 100).
