A section of Highway 98 near the Tyndall Air Force Base area is slated to change in several areas beginning June 29, 2018.
Individuals navigating the stretch of highway will notice the posted speed limit changing from 45 mph to 50 mph. Additionally, a flashing sign to indicate a school zone will be posted in front of Tyndall Elementary prompting travelers to slow to 35 mph while the flashing is active.
“From a security forces standpoint, speed enforcement is always important,” said Tech. Sgt. Ronnie Jones, 325th Security Forces Squadron member. “[It is there to] ensure we get individuals to and from the installation, getting to work in proper time and making sure safety is kept in mind as well. As a priority of ours, we want to make sure speed enforcement is done right and that we are taking care of our personnel to ensure the mission is being accomplished.”
Jones went on to explain that the 325th SFS has jurisdiction on Highway 98 from the Dupont Bridge to Crooked Island and that anyone traveling in the jurisdiction, whether military or civilian, may be interacted with by them to ensure they are following the law, to include speed measures.
He urged frequenters of the patch of land to obey the traffic laws as though going through different channels, all tickets from the 325th SFS are legal and binding.
“There are different ramification that could occur to individuals not following speed enforcement, [as an example], military members and civilian employees, we issue citations,” he elaborated. “Any ticket that is for civilians, they still follow the protocol as if they were in town. Military tickets, the military will take care of them.
“Overall, speed enforcement is important because of the safety aspect involved,” Jones continued. “When individuals start to disobey speed limits and not following laws, there is increased vulnerability for accidents.”
Security forces members like Jones want to inform the public that enforcement of Highway 98 will be ‘business as usual’ and travelers should see no more, but no less the usual number of 325th SFS members patrolling the area.
