20th MDG construction begins phase II

Phase two of the 20th Medical Group military construction project began in April and is expected to conclude by January 2019.

During the first phase of the project, a $57 million medical facility was constructed to replace the 1960’s era building, which was originally erected as an in-patient hospital. The new structure provided approximately 31,000 eligible beneficiaries with a more functional area.

The second phase of the project consists of the previous facility’s removal, the construction of a new ambulance services shelter and resurfacing of patient and staff parking.

“The biggest benefit for the patients is proximity to the main entrance,” said George Watson, 20th MDG facility manager. “Not only are we resurfacing the old (lot), but we’re adding 150 parking spots for patients directly adjacent to the main entrance to this clinic. In addition to that, we have eight handicap spots that are going to be straight out in front of the main clinic.”

Prior to the project’s completion, lack of available parking and its distance from the clinic proved challenging for some visitors.

Circling the smaller lot for an open spot or parking in an area far from the building may have wasted patient time, while less able-bodied individuals navigating to the building may face the risk of worsening their injury or illness.

Facility members are working to make visiting the clinic easy for patients, such as providing a shuttle service from the door to patient vehicles, said 2nd Lt. Kimberly Dotson, 20th Medical Support Squadron medical logistics flight commander. Being able to provide better patient care is exciting for the staff, she continued.

For many in the local community, the replacement of the old 20th MDG hospital does not come easy. Memories of births or years of treatment there have given them a special connection to the building.


Watson said memories made in the old clinic will last forever, but the transition to the new clinic can be viewed as a relocation to a new town. It is an opportunity to build new memories and experiences.

While Team Shaw members await the completion of the project’s second phase, the 20th MDG continues to provide trusted care to help service members and their families. By focusing on their patients, the medical staff helps eliminate medical worries Airmen face, allowing them to keep their mind on the mission.
