Air Force Global Strike Command hosted the first Biennial Training Equal Opportunity and Alternative Dispute Resolution Conference at the Eubank Conference Center, June 11-15, 2018.
Air Force EO strives to accomplish its mission by promoting a work environment without personal, social or institutional barriers that could prevent members from rising to their highest potential.
“People forget that EO is part of the mission of the Air Force because we take care of the people,” said Carolyn Magsby, AFGSC EO chief.
The conference focused on training the Airmen on strategies to help create a better work space, including better mediation techniques.
“If our EO technicians don’t receive training and they are handling a case, the case itself could become voided because the member wasn’t trained,” Magsby said. “It is important to emphasize their training and to advance their abilities in order for us to carry out the mission.”
The conference also included guest speakers who emphasized the importance and discussed strategies on modifying behavior that could be inappropriate in the Air Force.
“When someone is using profanity, talking about people inappropriately or using language that can be perceived as derogatory or hurtful, you all, as EO practitioners, must engage,” said Cyrus A. Salazar, Director of Air Force equal opportunity. “If you don’t do it, who else will?”
EO responds to situations of prejudice and proactively tries to prevent them from happening in the first place.
“EO isn’t about complaints, it’s about how we can create an environment free from discrimination and sexual harassment,” Magsby said.
