NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 28, 2018) – Susan Hillyard, administrative support assistant, Old Hickory Lake Resource Manager’s Office, is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District Employee for March 2018.
Hillyard is being recognized for her work and leadership while making exceptional contributions to the execution of Old Hickory Lake's Shoreline Management Program. Old Hickory Lake is one of the busiest Corps Lakes for recreation and maintains one of the largest shoreline Management programs in the country.
Lt. Col. Cullen Jones, Nashville District commander, said Hillyard’s role in the Old Hickory Lake Shoreline Management is unique. She expertly manages all administrative duties and has sought out ways to improve local practices within the community to gain efficiency.
“Susan has made exceptional contributions to the execution of Old Hickory Lake's Shoreline Management Program and she’s recognized for her contributions,” said Jones.
He said her work and current plan provides policies and guidelines for the effective long-range management of finite shoreline resources. On top of all her other duties as an Administrative Assistant, she supported the collection of permit and license fees by processing hundreds of bills. She created Revenue Generating Agreements in CEFMS to allow adjacent landowners to pay their bills on pay.gov.
Jones said with an already hectic work schedule, Sue expertly continues to manage all her administrative duties and practiced ways to improve and energize the program.
“I really like working on Shoreline Management and working with the people here at Old Hickory,” said Hillyard. I like assisting the public especially veterans and active duty military members, and see the smile on their faces when they leave the office.”
She said administrative responsibilities for shoreline management billing is her new love, knowing that she starts the process with creating the statement and following up on it and seeing the final bill that is paid.
Hillyard said she was extremely shocked and excited to be recognized with the award.
“I’m proud and excited to be noticed for just doing my job that I take pride in doing every day,” said Hillyard. This can be a very tough and tedious job but training has helped me focus and makes the day go by faster.
Hillyard also pointed out that one of the most important aspects of Shoreline Management is to protect and restore the natural environmental conditions of the shoreline, to establish and maintain acceptable fish and wildlife habitat, to preserve aesthetic qualities, and to promote the safe and healthful use of the lake and the surrounding public lands by the general public.
“She is most deserving (for this recognition) because of the extra effort, he puts forth in doing her job, in all cases exceeding the requirements of her position,” said Crystal Tingle, Natural Resource Manager for the Old Hickory Lake.
Tingle said Hillyard truly cares about her work, co-workers, the community, people in general and continuously demonstrates selfless service by taking initiative, going above and beyond what is necessary to see that others do better.
“Susan is a role model employee, whose ‘can do’ attitude is an example for others to emulate and she is a huge asset to the Nashville District team,” said Tingle.
Tingle added that Hillyard's strengths are her unique ability to work with people at all levels, from fellow administrative personnel to senior leaders, her desire to serve others, and her love the community, and the Corps of Engineers.
Hillyard said that one of the keys to her success was being able to readily adapt to changes in new systems, being patient and staying consistent.
“I am humbled by this recognition and really do enjoy my job,” said Hillyard. “I hope everyone gains a better overview of what we do and why shoreline management it so important.
Hillyard and husband Bill have been married since 2014 and have three grown children, Jason, Kayla and Jessica.
She is a native of Cotton Town, Tenn. She earned an Associates in Business Administration from Butler County Community College in Butler, Pa.
Her hobbies include all outdoor activities, camping, kayaking, spending time with family and friends, watching Greenbay Packers football, and the Kentucky Wildcats .
Jones said Hillyard’s professionalism, dedication to mission execution, and superior performance is a credit to the Nashville District, the region, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Hillyard said people who live along the lake should check with the Lake Resource Manager’s Office before making a final decision regarding the purchase of adjoining private property with the intent of constructing a dock or performing any work on public property.
“Susan remains engaged with the public and fellow employees at the Natural Resource Manager's Office. She is always willing to help wherever she can to improve the process,” said Jones.
