FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq – National police officers and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers conducted a combined operation to search for illegally possessed weapons in eastern Baghdad Dec 13.

Police officers from 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st National Police Division, led the operation, which occurred in the Baghdad Al Jadida area of New Baghdad; Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment attached to 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, took up support positions as the police conducted the search.

"NP led the charge during this search and netted five AK-47 assault rifles and several rounds of ammunition," said Staff Sgt. Rodrigo Vargas, a Houston native, assigned to 1-66 AR.

As Iraqi security forces continue their vigilance in maintaining security in eastern Baghdad, MND-B forces have shifted to providing a supporting role. For this operation, the 1-66 AR Soldiers maintained perimeter and rooftop security while the NP conducted the search.

"The job has gotten a lot easier compared to six months ago," said Sgt. Joshua Fairburn, a Company C, 1-66 AR Soldier from Phoenix.

Vargas explained that the confiscated weapons and ammunition remained in NP custody. The 3rd Bn., 1st Bde. Iraqi Police officers placed identification tags on the seized weapons and issued receipts to the previous owners for future reimbursement.

"Today, every weapon confiscated was freely turned in," he said.

Even though the residents voluntarily turned over their weapons, the NP still performed a thorough search of each apartment to ensure they "did the job right," Vargas concluded.
