NEW YORK — Two Sailors from the guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG 57), based at Norfolk, Virginia, participated in a read aloud program during Fleet Week New York at the Brooklyn Public Library.
“I was a teacher before I joined the Navy so any excuse to read to a kid is great because we’re showing them Sailors, the Navy and exposing them to books and reading,” said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Brian Keenan, from Philadelphia.
During this event, Kennan and Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Kyle Finley, from Merritt Island, Florida, read to children from Brooklyn’s Basis Independent private school in the Red Hook region. Each Sailor took turns reading books selected by children from the pre-kindergarten and first grade classes.
“I have a young daughter and she is so used to seeing Sailors, but these kids don’t get that chance so it’s kind of cool to come out here and introduce them to the Navy,” said Finley.
Throughout Fleet Week, Sailors and Marines will be participating in various outreach programs like this and other community relations’ projects like this to help highlight the military and opportunities that youth may not be aware of.
“Kids don’t really see Sailors so much and I think at this age, especially first grade, they’re getting asked what they want to be when they grow up so seeing these different people in their community is really beneficial,” said Kat Savage, a librarian that helped to coordinate the event.
In addition to events like this, the public will have opportunities to tour participating Navy and Coast Guard ships as well as a chance to meet the men and women who serve in today's fleet.
FWNY, now in its 30th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
