Booths run parallel to each other, competing for floor space as participants navigate a maze of vendors. In the distance a bell rings and everyone stops. A wave of applause hits the crowd accompanied by a little roar of cheers. Just like that someone is hired. Here at the Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC), the vendors aren’t offering products; they’re offering jobs to several hundred participants.
One of the participants was Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Kendra Velasquez, from Syracuse, New York, a Sailor assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Velasquez was seeking hiring information.
“I wanted to see what civilian employers look for in potential candidates,” said Velasquez. “Getting their opinion on how one should tailor their resume or what they want to see from prospective hires. Some of the companies brought up what qualifications or certifications that are desired. It was really eye opening.”
In addition to hiring people on the spot, informative classes were offered to help potential job seekers.
“I took part in a resume session,” said Velasquez. “They taught you about preparing a resume and what you should look at on the application to help guide you. They also gave details on the do’s and don’ts for resume writing, some of which I didn’t know before this class. This is something I would recommend to everyone.”
The job fair, hosted by the FFSC, also included interviewing, financial management, and job search classes. The Transition Goals, Plans, and Success program, for example, is available for service members who are at the end of their military service.
“The whole purpose behind this is to help the service member transition,” said Britt Feldman, director of Fleet and Family Support Center Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. “Whether they take part of this job fair or take advantage of one the transition classes, we’re here to help.”
With 147 employers looking for those with military experience and their families, FFSC gave an opportunity to military members looking for a new beginning.
“This is really what we do,” said Feldman. “We have a holistic program, and we teach resume writing and the skills of interviews, but this job fair is really where the rubber meets the road. Every time I hear that bell ring I smile because I know we’ve helped an individual succeed and there’s nothing better than that.”
Feldman also said there are classes focused on preparing individuals for job searching and our upcoming job fair in September. For more information on upcoming job fairs, visit the FFSC website at www.ffsp.navy.mil.
Nimitz is conducting a docking planned incremental availability at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, where the ship is receiving scheduled maintenance and upgrades.
