Team Shaw members took a Basic Riders Course to hone their skills at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina on May 10.
The BRC is a two-day course that consist of three to four hours of class time and approximately 12 hours out on the riding course. During class time, safety management and basics about a motorcycle are covered. Out on the course, basic riding techniques are taught by the riding instructor.
“The Basic Riders Course is designed to take someone with very little to no riding experience and get them to be able to operate a motorcycle safely and confidently,” said Staff Sgt. Brandon Gaskins, 20th Security Forces Squadron BRC instructor.
Instructors teach everyone at the same pace and same level on multiple bikes so no one is left behind.
“The instructors are very knowledgeable and really open your eyes to things you may not have been paying attention to before,” said Airman Justin Fatum, 20th Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle operator. “They ride different bikes which is cool because then they can specifically help someone who has a similar bike to them.”
According to the Department of Defense and Air Force Instruction 91-207, all military members are required to take the BRC if operating a street legal motorcycle. One year after that, members are required to take the Intermediate Course and then a refresher course every five years.
