Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) volunteered at Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 239 during a community service (COMSERV) event, May 11, 2018.

Four Nimitz Sailors prepared salads and cooked steaks that were offered at a discounted price to members of the post. They were also able to exchange experiences with veterans and talk about the history of VFW Post 239, which was established in 1919.

“We recently had Sailors start volunteering from the Nimitz,” said Pete Cholometes, the house and club manager at VFW Post 239. “We offer discounted meals here, and they require a lot of preparation. We were struggling for volunteers and were in need of backup. It helps to have volunteers from the Nimitz and really improves the quality of service that the veterans receive. We really hope that it continues.”

Sailors assigned to Nimitz can sign up for COMSERV events, like the event at the VFW Post, which help improve relationships in the local community.

“If there is something that I can do to give back to the community during my free time, then I figure that helping veterans is a good place to start,” said Interior Communications Electrician Seaman Samuel Korves, from Waterloo, Illinois. “I feel like this is a good way to spend my time instead of going out and spending all of my money on partying or something.”

Non-profit organizations, like the VFW, often rely on volunteers to maintain operations.

“The VFW organization is run by membership and volunteers,” said Cholometes. “We have leadership here at the post, and we are in charge of organizing events and securing donations and support. Without volunteers, though, it would be really hard to make things happen, and they are critical to our viability.”

Now that Nimitz is in port, there are more opportunities to volunteer, including more at the VFW post. To assist or sponsor an activity contact Nimitz’s religious ministries.

Nimitz is currently conducting a docking planned incremental availability at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility where the ship is receiving scheduled maintenance and upgrades.
