Cadet Rasheed Escobar, Cadet Kevin Nicholas, Cadet Ruben DPaula, Cadet Charles Moorehead and Cadet Zhane Proctor were all called to the stage by Lt. Col. Angel Ortiz towards the ending of the ceremony to be pinned as second lieutenants.

Brig. Gen. Deborah Howell, the adjutant general, pinned the newly promoted officers alongside family and friends and were then saluted by five noncommissioned officers welcoming them as new leaders of the VING.

The soldiers took Reserved Officer Training Corps courses along with their major requirements needed to graduate.

“Being a part of the VING made the ROTC process easier as I went straight to level three and four courses on track to finish within my two-year degree program,” said Moorehead, military police officer from 661st Military Police Detachment.

“My future plans in the VING is to establish myself in my new position/role as an officer, and ensure that my soldiers follow me as we work hard to improve the status of the unit,” Charles continued.

The newly pinned officers will be sent off to Basic Officer Leadership Course for their assigned branches for five months, to complete their new roles as second lieutenants in the VING.

“I find it to be a great relief, but the course set the foundation for what’s to come which is more difficult than I’ve ever experienced,” said Escobar, platoon leader for 610th Quartermaster Detachment.

Howell congratulates the cadets on their new journey as the graduates made their final walk as the enriched, elite and educated class of 2018.
