FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Paratroopers assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division attended a Paratroopers for Life Forum, May 1, 2018, at the Hall of Heroes on Fort Bragg, as the “All Americans” transition to life after the military.

The PFLF is hosted quarterly and this quarter’s focus was on information technology careers and academic opportunities.

Information technology officials from various companies and academia shared their experience, the opportunities within their organizations and what veterans can do to plan ahead.

The forum was not just focused on the technological aspect of IT, but also the various positions and opportunities the IT organizations offer.

“I discovered companies I’ve never heard of before and there are more opportunities out there than I thought,” said Spc. Guilherme Pereira, a Coral Springs, Florida-native and a human resource specialist assigned to 18th Human Resources Company, 82nd Special Troops Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division Sustainment Brigade.

Paratroopers could also explore positions in sales, marketing, finance and project manager programs within the organizations.

Pereira, who was there to learn about the IT opportunities of the forum, learned that he could switch jobs within an organization.

“A career change is possible,” said Pereira. “Companies are willing to work with you if you talk to them and inform them of your situation.”

The forum consisted of representatives from Wake Tech Community College, Siemens Healthcare, SAS (Analytics Software & Solutions), IBM, North Carolina State University, and more.

Some opportunities include mentorship, internship and available scholarships.

Often seeking veterans, the organizations shared information on what Paratroopers could do while they are still serving to better prepare themselves for the transition.

“Veterans bring a wealth of information,” said Marilyn Terrill, the interim dean for Business and Public Services Technology Division at Wake Tech Community College. “They bring their persistence and perseverance. They’re compassionate and caring.”

Terrill also highlighted that veterans are dependable and graduate at a high rate with high grade point averages.

The forum mirrors the Army’s Soldier For Life-Transition Assistance Program, which provides transition assistance and network opportunities to Paratroopers who plan to separate from active duty service, whether it’s retirement after a long career or completion of their first service contract.
