SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – Cavities were filled, questions were answered and diplomas were handed out at the 20th Dental Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, as residents of the Crosswell Home for Children finished the Shaw Dental School program.
The 20th DS partners regularly with local organizations to spread the word about oral hygiene and promote regular dental care. Their Shaw Dental School program is a way to teach kids how to take care of their teeth.
“Typically we go to schools and we talk to groups of children about oral health,” said Senior Airman Brittany Munguia, 20th DS preventative dentistry supervisor. “We’ve gone to Cherryvale and Wilson Hall and we give a presentation. We also have a dragon that we are able to demo with. The kids love the demo dragon.”
Capt. Sarah Curry, 20th DS general dentist, educated the children and helped them practice teeth cleaning and filling cavities on models of teeth.
“I would recommend brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day,” said Curry.
Taking care of the people that take care of us is a Team Shaw priority. The dental team supports this by visiting schools, conducting poster-design contests promoting oral health and hosting guests from local organizations to be part of the program.
