Force Master Chief Eddie L. Knight Makes History Following His Retirement

    MILLINGTON, TN, UNITED STATES

Story by Petty Officer 3rd Class Kyle Hafer

    Commander, Navy Recruiting Command

(Millington, Tenn.) – Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) Force Master Chief Eddie L. Knight of Jacksonville, Fla. retired as the final force master chief of NRC after 30 years, nine months, and nine days of dedicated service in the U.S. Navy at a ceremony held in Millington, Tenn., March 16.

Concluding his three historic years as the force master chief of the Navy recruiting community, Knight played a large part in every Sailor and civilian throughout the fleet.

Rear Adm. Andrew Mueller, deputy commander of the Navy Recruiting Command, the presiding officer, addresses Knight during the ceremony. “I cannot begin to tell you what a privilege it is for me to be here on such a momentous occasion, to honor Force Knight’s 30 years of honorable service,” said Mueller. “You have been pivotal to the Navy Recruiting Command enterprise since you arrived to be our final force master chief. As a recruiting force, we are the face of our Navy to the nation we’ve all sworn to protect, and Knight’s dedication and hard work the last few years has helped shape the future of hundreds of young men and women. On behalf of Navy Recruiting Command, thank you so much for your service to our great country.”

Under Knights guidance, NRC has been dedicated to inspiring a new generation of talent to join the Navy the nation needs.

“When we do business, we have to do business above reproach,” said Knight. “There are three “T’s” I always talk about. That’s trust, transparency and team work. It is all about family, self-respect and respecting others.”

Knight has influenced many Sailors and civilians of Navy recruiting while continuing to lead, develop and mentor the Sailors of the future.

“During the time I have been here at Navy Recruiting Command, Force Knight has been one of the driving forces that has motivated me to do my best,” said Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Samuel Coffee, an enlisted aide of NRC. “He has been that person that will genuinely help someone with their career. His guidance has been invaluable and he will be missed.”

During his visits to 450 recruiting stations throughout the nation, Knight made a lasting impression on senior leadership as well.

“Force Master Chief Knight has had an extraordinary career,” said Chief Navy Counselor Tyrell Bouler. “I’m sure it must feel good to have impacted so many lives and that you served your country so honorably. I definitely appreciate all that he has done, from his leadership, his friendship and professionalism. Everything that he has brought to Navy Recruiting Command will not be forgotten.”

Knight has had a long, successful career, serving as a machinist mate on the USS Independence (CV 62) to becoming the staff command master chief at U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. Fifth Fleet, and to no surprise his final tour of duty makes history.

“The foundation [of your life] should be your family, yourself and your career,” said Knight. “That’s where my heart is. I challenge every one of you, whether you’re in the military or not, do the right thing even if no one is looking. Make sure that you reach back and pull someone else up.”
