For the past decade, service members with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station New River have shown their unwavering commitment and dedication to the Operational Support Airlift Program, earning them the Joint Operational Support Airlift Center Unit of the Year award, in the United States Marine Corps Small Aircraft Category for fiscal year 2017 at MCAS New River, Feb. 14.
“I am very proud of my Marines,” said Lt. Col. Quentin Vaughn, H&HS, MCAS New River, commanding officer as he accepted the JOSAC award on behalf of H&HS, MCAS New River. “Every time I come through the gate and drive onto the air station it’s a very proud moment.”
H&HS was a key contributor to the U.S. Marine Corps Small Aircraft Category; logging 1,897 flight hours on 432 missions, carrying 632 passengers with 30,700 pounds of cargo for fiscal year 2017.
Capt. Hyunhak Yim, assistant operations officer for H&HS was the operations officer during the time the award was earned. He and his team were attributes to the squadrons continued success.
“This kind of award doesn’t happen by accident,” said Yim. “When we get this kind of recognition from (United States Transportation Command) as a whole, it makes all the hours that we put into scheduling all the aircraft, all of the dynamic missions, carrying all the general officers and distinguished visitors to and from military installations and civilian airfields literally all over the country, definitely worthwhile.”
H&HS has received the JOSAC of the year award from USTRANSCOM from fiscal year 2008 to 2017 and they strive to carry that perfect streak into 2018.
“We are aggressively pursuing the 11th consecutive award,” said Yim. “We are very deliberate in our game plan to get the 11th JOSAC of the Year award.”
The fiscal year 2017 award was presented to Vaughn by Col. Michael Scalise, deputy commander, Marine Corps Installations East, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune on behalf of Brig. Gen. Julian Alford, commanding general, MCIEAST, MCB Camp Lejeune.
Scalise said he was not surprised at all that H&HS was acknowledged for their achievements and that he is proud of the work they’ve been doing for the past 10 years.
Vaughn received the award for fiscal year 2017 but also acknowledged all of the commanding officers before him.
“It’s very humbling that I get to receive this award because during this period of time I was selected to be the commanding officer,” said Vaughn.
“In the 10 years there was a lot of commanding officers before me that got to receive the awards. I stand on the shoulders of giants, pilots and Marines that do their job and make my job a little bit easier.”
Vaughn humbly thanked his Marines for their dedication to the mission, hard work and hours put in to earning the 10th consecutive JOSAC of the Year award.
