CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Army Sgt. Max Nowry, from Wheeling, Ill., was one of only five double champions at the 2018 Armed Forces Wrestling Championship, winning gold in both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman style competitions.

The annual championship featuring teams from the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force, was held at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., February 24-25.

Nowry won all three matches in Greco-Roman, defeating his Marine opponent 10-0 due to technical superiority in the final meet to earn gold for his weight class. On the second day of competition he pinned all three of his opponents, earning bonus points which were key to the All-Army’s top place finish in the Freestyle.

Nowry competed as a member of the All-Army team at 55 kg in the Greco-Roman style and 57 kg in Freestyle.

“I want to compete for the Armed Forces program because when I have Army written across my chest it means a lot more to me. There’s a greater sense of pride there,” said Nowry. “I don’t compete just for myself or my family, but for the Army and those other military members that are out there supporting our freedoms.”

Nowry is supporting his fellow soldiers by teaching them techniques to stay fit through sports.

“We started this total soldier enhancement training program in 2016 where we go out and train our fellow Soldiers in boxing, wrestling and other fitness events which allows us to give back to the Army,” said Nowry. “We’re grateful for our opportunity to wrestle and everyone we train loves the chance to learn these new techniques. It really adds to the overall value of our program and adds to the Army’s overall physical fitness program.”

The Armed Forces Sports program is the culmination of each branch of services’ sports and fitness program. Service members participate and compete at unit level intramurals and advance to the All-Service level where they can compete in national and international competitions.

The AFWC is comprised of three championship competitions that include Greco-Roman, Men’s Freestyle and Women’s Freestyle wrestling. Each men’s style consists of 10 weight classes and one Women’s Freestyle match in the 55kg weight class between Army and Navy.

The wrestlers that competed at this year’s Armed Forces Wrestling championship who finished in the top three of the Greco-Roman weight classes will qualify to compete at the U.S. Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Tulsa, Okla., in June. If the wrestler qualifies there, they will earn a spot on Team USA and represent the United States at the Wrestling World Championships in Budapest, Hungary this October.

Nowry graduated from Wheeling High School in 2008 and is a human resources specialist stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado.
