CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Nathaniel Giorgio, from Leesport, Pa., won a silver medal in Greco-Roma and a bronze medal in Freestyle at the 2018 Armed Forces Wrestling championship.
The annual championship featuring teams from the Army, Marines, Navy and Air Force, was held at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., February 24-25.
Giorgio competed as a member of the All-Navy team, which includes wrestlers from the Coast Guard, at 63 kg in the Greco-Roman style and 61 kg in Freestyle.
“I wanted to become a part of this team because I get to do something that I love,” said Giorgio. “I have a passion for wrestling and I wanted to represent the Coast Guard and the Navy. I’ve been wrestling ever since I was a kid, so I just wanted to continue to do it.”
Giorgio defeated his Air Force opponent 8-0 due to technical superiority in his Greco-Roman match to earn silver for his weight class in the Greco-Roman competition. He defeated his Air Force opponent due to a technical fall to earn bronze in Freestyle.
Giorgio said being a part of the team has helped him to become a better leader.
“I’m the only officer on the Navy team, and the only Coast Guard member, so I get to interact with alot of enlisted sailors,” said Giorgio. “It allows me to learn about all of their diverse backgrounds, and learn about the struggles they go through in work and life.”
The Armed Forces Sports program is the culmination of each branch of services’ sports and fitness program. Service members participate and compete at unit level intramurals and advance to the All-Service level where they can compete in national and international competitions.
The AFWC is comprised of three championship competitions that include Greco-Roman, Men’s Freestyle and Women’s Freestyle wrestling. Each men’s style consists of 10 weight classes and one Women’s Freestyle match in the 55kg weight class between Army and Navy.
The wrestlers that competed at this year’s championship who finished in the top three of the Greco-Roman weight classes will qualify to compete at the U.S. Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Tulsa, Okla., in June. If the wrestler qualifies there, they will earn a spot on Team USA and represent the United States at the Wrestling World Championships in Budapest, Hungary this October.
Giorgio graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 2015 and is a helicopter pilot stationed at Naval Air Station Atlantic City in New Jersey.
