RALEIGH, N.C. – Soldiers from across 60th Troop Command’s (60th TC) varied units competed during the annual, two-day Best Warrior Competition (BWC) in Raleigh, North Carolina, Feb. 10-11, 2018.

Four enlisted Soldiers and three noncommissioned officers reported from several of the brigade’s specialized units, which included representatives from the 430th Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, the 440th Army Band, the North Carolina Army National Guard’s (NCARNG) Medical Detachment, the 42nd Civil Support Team (42nd CST), and the 732nd Forward Support Company (732nd FSC), in hopes of representing 60th TC at the state-level competition in March 2018.

The competitors spent the weekend performing task to prove their mental and physical strength, including an Army Physical Fitness Test, a one page essay, a six-mile ruck march, and a test of their map reading skills.

Additionally, Soldiers had to report before a noncommissioned officer or enlisted board, depending on their rank. During the board they answered questions about various military topics, discussed current events and had their uniforms inspected.

Army Sgt. Maj. David Lanning, the 60th TC Operations Sergeant Major, believes those competing for Best Warrior go back to their unit as stronger Soldiers, regardless if they win.

“I think they realize their strengths and weaknesses when they're put into the different scenarios that we’re providing here,” Lanning said. “They can go back and teach their Soldiers what happened here.”

Some Soldiers, including Army Sgt. Danielle McElroy, a dental specialist assigned to the NCARNG Medical Detachment in Stem, North Carolina, competed as a way to set an example for others in their unit.

“I thought it would be a motivation for junior enlisted to see me step up and attempt this,” McElroy said. “I am fairly new to the unit. I figured if they saw a person that was wanting to push forward, it might motivate them to do the same thing.”

After two days of events, and all the scores tallied, it was announced that Spc. Skylar Kitchen, assigned to the 732nd FSC and Sgt. Betuel Moneje assigned to the 42nd CST would go on to represent 60th TC at the North Carolina National Guard BWC.

The winners of the state’s competition will have the opportunity to represent the NCNG in the Region Competition later this spring.
