NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 15, 2017) – A team of employees received the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Hedgehog Award today in recognition of efforts that ensured a construction project for the U.S. Department of Energy finished on time and $5 million under budget.
Lt. Col. Cullen Jones, Nashville District commander, presented the award at a staff meeting and praised the construction team at the Y-12 National Security Complex at Oak Ridge, Tenn., and other employees who provided support at the Nashville District headquarters in Nashville, Tenn., for working extended hours and weekends over a five-month period.
“To say that they had a challenging situation out there would be an understatement at best,” Jones said. “The bottom line, through this team’s efforts – contracting, legal, engineering, construction – they helped drive that contract to deliver on time. And it was a complete team effort.”
Jones said the team met the challenge of a constructing a leading-edge facility, which included design features such as solar panels, thermal wells and emergency notification system. Some features were add-ons during construction.
Officials dedicated the Construction Support Building Nov. 20, 2017 at the U.S. Department of Energy Y-12 National Security Complex, the first structure completed in support of the Uranium Processing Facility project.
The building is LEED Gold certified, the first at the Y-12 project. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED certification means healthier, more productive places, reduced stress on the environment by encouraging energy and resource-efficient buildings, and decreased utility costs. LEED Gold is determined by fulfilling credits and points based on materials used that effect human health and the environment, and other factors such as water efficiency.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District team worked closely with the contractor, Korte Construction Company, headquartered in Highland, Illinois, to construct the three-story, 64,800-square-foot building, which is a combination of office and warehouse space for more than 300 personnel.
Eric Pagoria, Construction Branch chief in the Nashville District, nominated the team for recognition because they displayed a passion to the mission and a commitment to excellence.
“The Department of Energy was kept well informed of the challenges as well as the steps being taken to mitigate those challenges,” said Pagoria. “An overall attitude of ownership by the entire team resulted in the overall success in delivery.”
The team members recognized are Tommy Long, Jason Phillips, Brian Whitus, Nathan Wallace, Terry Keathley, James McKinney, Chad Lawson, Gerry Raines, Jacqueline Huff and Joe Duncan from the Eastern Tennessee Resident Engineer Office. Barry Cunningham, Construction Support Section; Isaac Taylor, Contracting; Bonnie Jagoditz, Office of Counsel; Patty Coffey, David Hendrix and Greg Bishop, Project Management; were acknowledged from the Nashville District Headquarters.
Grandon Martin and Kevin Lanning with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District also supported the project and were lauded for their efforts.
The Hedgehog Award is given quarterly by the Nashville District to individuals or team of employees to recognize excellence.
