Andersen AFB commemorates African American History Month

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam – Since 1976, Americans take time remember events that shaped black history during African-American History Month.

Service members at Andersen Air Force Base continue the annual tradition by bringing awareness through educational and social events throughout the month of February.

The African-American Heritage Association (AAHA) was established at Andersen AFB in 2012, with the mission of spreading awareness of African-American history and heritage through lectures and other awareness events for the base and community.

“Having events here, whether they are educational or social, allows us to continue to actively raise awareness to a diverse culture,” said Master Sgt. Crystal Brown, 36th Communications Squadron section chief and president of AAHA. “Educating and spending time with your peers allows us to better come together to acknowledge and support our differences.”

AHAA members will host several scheduled events, including a speaking engagement by renowned diversity speaker Dr. Samuel Betances on Feb. 11 at Chapel 2. Member will also be invited to a Soul Food Extravaganza, a day celebrating southern foods. Finally, during a Learn-a-bration event on Feb. 23, volunteers will teach 15-minute sessions about African-American history at Andersen Elementary School. All events intend to raise awareness of stereotypes and how to address situations of discrimination.

“We all have moments where we feel stereotyped at times,” said Airman 1st Class Felecia Clemons, 36th Medical Operation Squadron medical technician. “Having months like this one allows us to come together and reminds us of everything that we have been through, so that we can rally together and push forward as a team.”

For more information on AAHA or the events listed, contact Master Sgt. Brown at DSN 362-4798 or follow the Andersen AFB Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/36WGPA.
