USS Pearl Harbor, 15th MEU Return from Deployment

During deployment, Pearl Harbor and 15th MEU conducted maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in support of regional security, stability, and the free flow of maritime commerce.

"Our Blue-Green team proved themselves time and time again to be a professional and versatile contingency response force whether it was at sea, in the sky, or on land,” said Capt. Rome Ruiz, Commander, Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 3. "As an amphibious task force, our ships gained extensive experience by working with various partner nations and ship platforms which contributed to the increasing strength of our combat power. I am proud to have been part of this deployment and proud to have served with this talented team.”

While deployed, Sailors and Marines trained and operated with partnering nations such as India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and also participated in the biannual combat rehearsal, Alligator Dagger and bilateral engagement, Iron Magic.

“Our Sailors and Marines did an absolutely fantastic job this deployment,” said Cmdr. Theodore Essenfeld, Pearl Harbor’s commanding officer. “I could not have asked for a better team to come together to complete each mission we were tasked with. During Iron Magic and Alligator Dagger, the coordination between the Navy-Marine Corps team effectively projected power from the sea and ashore. At the same time, we gained the knowledge and training to make us a more cohesive team.”

Although there was plenty of work to be done throughout the course of the deployment, Sailors and Marines were still able to explore new cultures during port visits in Guam, India, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Singapore.

“We had many great opportunities to visit some very beautiful places,” said Ens. Tyler Renn, a native of Madison, Ala., assigned to the operations department aboard Pearl Harbor. “From the very green island of Guam to the deserts of the UAE to the urban life of Singapore, we were able to experience very different cultures from all around the world. It was a very eye-opening experience and I will never forget the memories I made during deployment.”

While deployed, Pearl Harbor traveled more than 40,000 miles through the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Gulf, and South China Sea.

Throughout the course of the seven-month deployment, Pearl Harbor sent off 3,856 lbs. and received 14,868 of mail; conducted 694 flight deck landings, takeoffs and vertical replenishment evolutions; launched and recovered landing craft, air cushions of Assault Craft Unit 5 192 times. Additionally, engineering department produced 7.56 million gallons of potable water, Sailors and Marines consumed 417,600 eggs, the barbershop performed 14,000 haircuts, and the ship’s store sold $600,000 in merchandise.

The America Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) is comprised of the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22) and Pearl Harbor. The three ships reported to PHIBRON 3 aboard America. Also embarked were the “Wildcards” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 23, Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 1, ACU-5 and Beachmaster Unit 5.

The 15th MEU is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force comprised of a ground combat element, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 5th Marines; an aviation combat element, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 161 (Reinforced); and a combat logistics element, Combat Logistics Battalion 15.
