The Basic Nutrition classes held aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River cover concepts of nutrition that include healthy food choices, lifestyle and behavioral changes, macronutrients, micronutrients, nutrition traps, trends, fast food and supplement use and abuse.

The classes are sponsored by Marine Corps Community Services to help service members and their families have the knowledge of what consists of a healthy diet.

“We can get the information out to the troops,” said Denise Martin, group exercise instructor at Wallace Creek Fitness Center. “We’re here to help them to maintain their weight and their health. A lot of them don’t know correct eating habits, so it’s putting it out there.”

Martin said the instructors want to educate Marines so they eat healthy foods and don’t end up on the Body Composition Program. They want to educate as many people as they can.

While some Marines and Sailors don’t know correct eating habits, others participate in the class to further their knowledge.

“I came to the class because I wanted to see if there was anything new they were teaching on nutrition that I haven’t heard yet,” said Cpl. Ingrid Taft, attendee of the class. “Nutrition is important because I want to live a long life. They say that people who live the longest lives live in Okinawa, Japan, which is where I came from. If I want to live long like them, I should probably take care of myself.”

Knowing about nutrition doesn’t necessarily mean a person will eat healthier.

“It definitely helps if you know what you’re eating,” said Taft. “(The classes) help me with knowledge, but they’re not going to help if they aren’t being used.”

People who are sluggish and tired throughout the day often aren’t eating enough to sustain themselves. They may be in a constant state of starvation.

“You need to eat good food in order to function properly throughout the day,” said Martin.

Metabolic testing can be used to find out the minimum amount of calories to live.

“Metabolic testing is where you’ll come in, with no eating, no exercise prior to and come sit quietly for about 10 minutes and breath into a meter,” said Martin. “That meter is actually going to give your resting metabolic rate, which is the amount of calories you need to exist. From there, you’ll get a little print out that makes suggestions on how you distribute your diet.”

These classes are held at the Wallace Creek Fitness Center aboard MCB Camp Lejeune every second Wednesday of the month and on MCAS New River every second Thursday of the month.

“I’m thankful for MCCS and all the different companies that work together to give us these resources, because if they didn’t, I feel I would be spending a lot of money trying to learn it on my own,” said Taft. “I feel like this is a benefit and would like to take advantage of it. I’m really thankful for that.”
