Boots to Business – Empowering Veteran Entrepreneurs

WATERS OFF THE COAST OF JAPAN – The forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), will be holding the Boots to Business (B2B) Introduction to Entrepreneurship course in the INDOC Classroom from 0800-1630, Nov. 7-8.
B2B is a two-part training course designed by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in partnership with the Institute for Veteran and Military Families (IVM) at Syracuse University to assist Sailors interested in exploring business ownership and entrepreneurship. The Introduction to Entrepreneurship course will teach Sailors the foundational knowledge needed to identify business opportunities, draft a business plan, evaluate its feasibility as a business concept, and launch new enterprises and ventures. The class will also introduce participating Sailors to government and veteran-friendly resources for accessing start-up capital, receiving technical assistance, and contracting opportunities.
“It is significant that we have Boots to Business on board Ronald Reagan,” said Lt. Cmdr. Emily Lapp, Ronald Reagan’s training officer. “It is an excellent opportunity for Sailors to optimize their time underway and prepare for their next phase of life. We all can’t be in the Navy forever, and there are so many opportunities out there in the private sector for those who want to start their own businesses.”
A recent study from the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affair’s Veterans Employment Initiative Task Force and SBA’s Interagency Task Force on Veteran’s Small Business Development has confirmed that veterans’ suitability for entrepreneurship is above average. The assessment states that “veteran-owned small businesses are a historically important, and presently growing, segment of U.S. small businesses. There are currently 2.5 million veteran-owned businesses in America representing 9.1 percent of all U.S. businesses that combined generate about $1 trillion in receipts and employ nearly 6 million Americans.”
The study also says veterans exhibit the innate motivation and disciplined skills paramount in building a business and creating jobs. The only factor that veterans may lack to succeed is “the knowledge and awareness of the tools and services available to support their ownership pursuits.”
“Sailors on board Ronald Reagan are energetic, detail oriented, and good at solving problems within a resource-constrained environment; which are the same skills that make small business owners successful,” said Lapp. “As Sailors look at their career options post-Navy, this course can help provide a roadmap for those interested in starting their own small business.”
At the completion of the introduction course, Sailors will have the opportunity to further their business education.
“The first step is to attend the course on board Ronald Reagan,” said Lapp. “After they finish that course, they become eligible for further study through an instructor-guided eight-week online course taught by professors from a consortium of accredited universities led by [IVM] at Syracuse University. By dedicating a minimum of 10 hours per week to connected and independent study, participants work through the fundamentals of developing an actionable business plan. These two classes will provide Sailors the skills they need to become successful entrepreneurs.”
Ronald Reagan, the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 5, provides a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interests of its allies and partners in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
