MILLINGTON, Tenn. (DEC. 15, 2017) – Navy Counselor 1st Class Michael Kinder, an East Haven, Connecticut native, was named Commander, Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) Sailor of the Year (SOY) for 2017.

“He was selected from an outstanding field of professional Sailors across the nation,” said Commander, NRC, Rear Adm. Pete Garvin. “Petty Officer Kinder and our other ‘Sailor of the Year’ finalists should be justifiably proud of their personal and professional accomplishments.”

Across 24 recruiting districts and two Navy Talent Acquisition Groups (NTAG), the NTAG New Orleans Sailor represented the highest of recruiting standards.

The SOY program was established in 1972 by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Whittet to recognize an individual Sailor who best represented the ever-growing group of dedicated, professional Sailors at each command.

“It is a great honor and a humbling experience to be recognized as CNRC Sailor of the Year,” said Kinder. “I didn't get here by myself. The Sailors on my team are the ones who helped me to become the Sailor I am.”

Six years ago, Kinder was told that he could not re-enlist, but recruiting gave him a chance back into the Navy.

Such an impressive feat is earned based on leadership, professionalism, dedication and sustained superior performance that stands out from all other Sailors of the same magnitude.

“His award as Sailor of the Year gives all of the junior Sailors in the command a role to strive for and emulate,” said Kinder’s mentor, Senior Chief Navy Counselor Troy Lacy. “And this award shows all Sailors in the command that hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed.”

Kinder, an East Haven High School graduate, enlisted out of New Haven, Connecticut as a Steelworker joining the U.S. Navy Seabees in 2006. In 2008, he was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

After his deployment in Cuba, Kinder completed two more deployments before processing out of the Navy and transferring into the reserves, serving with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 27 in Chicopee, Massachusetts.

In April 2013, Kinder accepted orders as a Canvasser Recruiter, beginning his career in the recruiting field. He then was selected into the Full-Time Support Program as a Navy Counselor. Kinder currently serves as the director of sales at the Talent Acquisition Onboarding Center New Orleans, overseeing 22 Sailors spanning throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.
