SAN DIEGO (NNS) – Cdr. Edward Bertucci relieved Cdr. Danielle Defant as commanding officer of the Arleigh-Burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60) during a change of command ceremony aboard the USS Midway Museum December 1, 2017.
After Defant was presented with multiple gifts for her time onboard USS Paul Hamilton she said some kind words to her shipmates.
“I may have spent very little time underway as your captain but there was not a doubt in my mind that I was at the right place at the right time, “ said Defant. “This was the best place for me to be to help Paul Hamilton get ready to deploy”
Dafant thanked her crew for supporting her during this tour. She thanked her triad, command master chiefs, department heads, navigator, division officers, mustangs, chief’s mess and ombudsmen among others.
“I was very fortunate to be part of this great crew, and I thank you for every experience,” said Defant. “Good luck to all of you.”
Defant and Bertucci proceeded to read their orders. Bertucci then relieved Defant as commanding officer of USS Paul Hamilton.
Upon assuming command, Bertucci recognized Defant’s hard work and leadership as CO.
“In the 18 months that I was your XO I never saw you shy away from hard work, a hard decision or a fight,” said Bertucci. “The ship and crew have certainly benefited from your efforts.”
“And now I speak directly to the crew,” said Bertucci “To the phantom warriors of Paul Hamilton I’ve worked with the vast majority of you, I’ve witnessed first hand your hard work and your spirit, over the next several months our collective energy will breathe life back into our ship. I am honored and very proud to be your captain and I look forward to our adventures together.”
Paul Hamilton is a multi-mission ship designed to operate independently or with an associated strike group. The ship is currently homeported in San Diego within the U.S. 3rd Fleet Area of Operations.
