SAN DIEGO (Nov. 28, 2017) -- Capt. Gerald Olin relieved Capt. Patrick V. Foege as Commander, Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 1 during a change of command ceremony aboard amphibious dock landing ship USS Rushmore (LSD 47), Nov. 28.
Foege began his tenure at PHIBRON 1 as deputy commander in December, 2014 and assumed command July, 2016. During his time, he successfully led USS Boxer (LHD 4) Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) through a compressed fleet response training plan (FRTP) cycle and a Western Pacific/Arabian Gulf deployment in 2016.
He also led the completion of major exercises in multiple fleet areas of operation including Iron Fist 2015 and 2017, Dawn Blitz 2017, and UNITAS 2017. His efforts throughout these missions had a global impact, demonstrating the capabilities of the blue/green team and the U.S. Navy’s ability to seamlessly work with partner nations.
Foege expressed his gratitude for the Sailors and Marines of PHIBRON 1 in his farewell address.
“It has been my honor and privilege to serve with you as Commander, Amphibious Squadron ONE,” said Foege. “The enduring selfless devotion exhibited by each commanding officer and every Sailor and Marine represented the very best our nation has to offer and inspired me every day. Our ARG/MEU teams set a consistently high standard of excellence across the full spectrum of warfare. Though you were frequently faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, you overcame them all to provide the Combatant Commanders with a competent, ready force that was prepared to execute any task.”
Foege’s next assignment will be as N3, Operations Officer, Tactical Training Group Pacific.
Olin will take command after first serving as deputy commander of PHIBRON 1.
His previous tours at sea include USS Benfold (DDG 65), Cruiser Destroyer Group 5, USS Decatur (DDG 73), Carrier Strike Group 7, executive officer of USS Independence (LCS 2), Gold Crew, and subsequently as commanding officer of Independence.
Ashore, Olin has served as officer in charge, Center for Surface Combat Systems, San Diego. He also served on the staff of Commander, Naval Surface Forces Pacific. His most recent shore assignment was as Director, Commander’s Action Group, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Olin looks forward to leading the USS Essex (LHD 2) ARG as they transition to an integrated phase, and deploy later next year.
“It is an honor to be given the opportunity to lead the men and women of Amphibious Squadron ONE and the ships of the Essex ARG,” said Olin. “I am grateful for the leadership and mentorship provided by Capt. Foege and wish him all the best as he prepares for his next assignment. This is an exciting time to be a part of amphibious warfare as we look to incorporate new technology initiatives into the ARG including integration of the F-35.”
PHIBRON 1 is one of nine U.S. Navy amphibious squadrons and is currently responsible for the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), amphibious dock landing ship USS Rushmore (LSD 47), and amphibious transport dock ships USS Anchorage (LPD 23) and USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26).
PHIBRON 1's primary mission is to command an amphibious ready group and coordinate with an embarked MEU to perform assigned naval, joint or combined operations.
