A 20th Force Support Squadron Do-It-Yourself Auto Repair Shop opened for customers, Nov. 6.
The shop, located at 311 Avocent Street, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, opened to give Team Shaw members a safe and authorized location to perform vehicle maintenance in place of parking lots or streets.
Paula Rupp, 20th FSS Arts and Crafts Center director, said individuals requested the project during a town hall and a later survey found the majority of participants wanted the facility.
Service members, retirees and family members may use one of the repair shop’s three bays as a work space, but they must bring their own tools and a helping hand.
“We have a two-person policy for safety,” said Horace Garrison, 20th FSS community services flight chief. “Both people don’t have to work on the car. If someone wants to take their spouse, girlfriend, friend or whoever, they can do that, but there has to be a second person there for safety reasons.”
The facility does not have trash or oil receptacles, so users must manage their own waste.
“Anything you take off the car, you must take with you,” said Harrison. “It’s an empty bay right now and it needs to be an empty bay when you leave, and we’re going to hold customers responsible for that.”
Interested individuals may contact the 20th FSS Arts and Crafts Center to check out a key Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or contact 20th FSS Outdoor Recreation to use the space on Saturdays, and return the key by 4:45 p.m. on the same day.
