The 20th Force Support Squadron main fitness center is scheduled to open a functional fitness area in October.

The facility features more than $96,000 of new equipment including battle ropes, pull-up bars and weight-lifting platforms.

“Our team’s belief and thought process is that we’re ready for war at all times,” said Tech. Sgt. Stasia Smith, 20th FSS fitness and sports noncommissioned officer in charge. “Combat-ready means, no kidding, you’re ready for combat.”

Shango Shetfield, 20th FSS assistant fitness director and Level 1 certified functional fitness expert, said functional fitness combines aerobic and anaerobic activities while improving strength and flexibility.

“A lot of people get caught up doing just strength exercise, and they’re lacking cardiovascular, or vice versa,” said Shetfield. “We want to have a well-balanced warrior Airman. My motto has always been, ‘fit to fight.’ I live by that. I’d love for everyone to get a chance to look at (the fitness area) and work out.”

Exercise equipment like the Alpha Warrior rig and sleds can help condition Airmen to endure the physical stressors of the battlefield, such as wearing heavy gear and buddy carries, said Smith.

After the area is set up, the fitness team wants to create functional fitness classes. Airmen with instructor qualifications are encouraged to contact the main fitness center if interested.

“Ideally, we’ll be able to do a 15-to-1 student-to-instructor ratio in a class of about 30 people, but anybody can individually come through and do a functional fitness workout,” said Shetfield.

The 20th FSS main fitness center and annex provide equipment to individuals with Defense Department identification cards. By staying fit, Shaw Airmen and Soldiers can ensure they continue to meet occupational standards and prepare themselves for future deployments.
