Sailors visited local schools with the SeaPerch, an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV), which demonstrated concepts of buoyancy, propulsion, electricity, circuits and switches to teach middle and high school students.
“The SeaPerch ROV, is an educational tool in this setting,” said Chief Navy Counselor Reginald Williams, City Outreach Officer for the Southeast Region. “The varying levels of sophistication in the SeaPearch allows for a broad appeal and integrates engineering and technology into the classroom. It gives students an introduction into different maritime, robotic and STEM related career fields”
The Office of Naval Research (ONR)-funded SeaPerch underwater robotics program demonstrates the basics of engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering focus. It is one of many components of STEM outreach efforts aimed at inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
The Office of Naval Research (ONR) provides the science and technology necessary to maintain the Navy and Marine Corps' technological advantage. Through its affiliates, ONR is a leader in science and technology with engagement in 50 states, 70 countries, 1,035 institutions of higher learning and 914 industry partners.
