Uber has been around since 2009 and Lyft since 2012, allowing your everyday joe to drive others as a friendly alternative to traditional taxis. That does not exclude Sailors from driving on their off time to earn some extra cash.

Sailors are using the easy-to-pick up Uber/Lyft service as a secondary source of income or as a way to spend their off-time.

“With the extra time I had on my hands, I stumbled across Lyft as a way to both make some money and properly utilize my time,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Billy Lee. “You just need a 4-door 2007 or newer vehicle and at least a year of driving with a license.”

The flexible hours of Uber/Lyft have allowed these Sailors to work whenever they choose, as long as those hours do not interfere with their ship schedule.

“You make your own hours,” said Aviation Maintenance Administrationman Antonio Davila. “You just turn the app on or off when you want to be on the clock. The flexibility depends on you and there is no boss or anyone above me whenever I drive.”

The pay that you get from working under these services depends on the hours and days you work, since the source of income is proportionate to the amount of customers you pick up and the time and distance you take them.

“If I push through a week, I typically earn 350-400 dollars,” said Lee.
“On a weekend, I can average $100-150,” said Davila.

As with any job, there are perks that set driving for Lyft/Uber apart.

“I can stop for a month and start back with no problems -- not a lot of jobs have that perk,” said Lee.

    But with perks come downsides.

“My first weekend driving, I had a passenger spill something he brought into my car, so I pulled off to the side [and] gave him paper towels to clean the mess up,” said Davila.

Whenever Ubering/Lyfting, it is important to keep safe and to not forget that it is your car and your ground rules for the ride.

“If somebody was to start driving for Lyft or Uber, my recommendation is to remember that is it your car,” said Davila. “Don’t let a passenger push you around or trash your car. Be nice and respectful, but at the end of the day, it’s just a part-time job for some extra cash and a great way to spend your free time while in the yards.”
