The life of a young inspiring musician is practice, practice, practice and practice some more. Christopher Sansone has been practicing playing the Flute for the past eight years. He practiced and played for the love of music and with aspirations of playing music professionally one day.
“Music is absolutely a big part of my life,” said Sansone. “So many positive things came from music.”
Before graduating from West Milford High School this past June, Sansone was planning to attend community college where he would pay to further his musical education. About two weeks before graduation, Sansone was introduced to a Marine Corps recruiter where he learned of the opportunities and benefits you gain from playing in the Marine Corps Band.
“Once the option to play flute in the Marine Corps Band was presented to me I had to take advantage of it,” said Sansone.
With one conversation Sansone has taken the initial steps to become part of the Marine Corps band. Next, he had to showcase his abilities through an audition with the musician placement director.
“At auditions I look for an applicant that has command of their instrument, so they can express themselves musically,” said Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Tony McCormick, the Music Placement Director for 1st Marine Corps District, Eastern Recruiting Region, Marine Corps Recruiting Command. “Everything he played had a flow to it. Nothing was mechanical and everything showed his musical artistry.”
With Sansone successfully completing the auditions, he was one step closer to playing in the Marine Corps Band and becoming a professional musician.
Sansone will now prepare his mind, body and spirit for the challenges of Marine Corps Recruit Training at Parris Island, South Carolina. Working with his Marine Corps recruiters, this young man will have the opportunity to play professionally all throughout the world where he can develop his professional skills and further his musical education with help from the military’s tuition assistance program.
The pride the West Milford native feels is drawn from his family.
“My parents support me in everything that I do and they are proud of this decision to play in the Marine Corps Band,” said Sansone.
