A crash simulator, prize giveaways and a police-escorted off-base ride were a few of the activities at Joint Base Andrews’ Seventh Annual Motorcycle Safety Day here, June 15.

“The reason we have a MSD is to prevent motorcycle safety briefings from becoming uninteresting,” said Master Sgt. Freddie Mims, 11th Civil Engineer Squadron operation engineering superintendent and MSD event coordinator. “We bring in entertainment so people can have fun and learn at the same time. We want attendees to gain motorcycle safety knowledge for riders and non-riders by learning riding techniques and being aware of roadways.”

The event also included riding competitions, guest speakers, live entertainment, food and the opportunity to meet with local motorcycle dealers and riding groups.

This year’s MSD was supported by more than 30 organizations and approximately 50 bikers participated in the annual off-base ride escorted by Prince George’s County Police Department.

“As a motorcyclist, this event is personally important to me,” said Davis. “This event goes beyond just motorcycle safety and gives JBA members a chance to learn about general traffic safety. Drivers all share the same roadways so we have the responsibility to watch out for each other.”

Since the first MSD in 2011, there has been a 70 percent drop in motorcycle fatalities among base riders according to Jamison Kesselring, 11th Wing Safety Office occupational safety and health technician.

“MSD is an effective, beneficial and educational event for JBA motorcyclist and motorist,” said Mims. “One of the 11th Wing’s priorities is to care for Airmen and their families and this event displays that by providing America’s Airmen with the knowledge and awareness to keep themselves and their families safe on the roads.”
