CELINA, Tenn. (June 10, 2017) – Kids caught plenty of fun today while corralling 2,000 nine-inch rainbow trout and 10 large display rainbow and brook trout released in the creek below the Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery during the 20th Annual Kids Fishing Rodeo.

Held in celebration of National Fishing and Boating week, the fishing rodeo provided a safe and fun environment for kids 15 and under. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District, Friends of Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery, Friends of Dale Hollow Lake, and the citizens of Clay County, Tennessee cosponsored the event that provided a unique opportunity for families to spend quality time together and for children to connect with nature.

“The annual kids fishing rodeo, hosted by the Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery, is an awesome outreach program for this area,” said Stephen Beason, resource manager at Dale Hollow Lake. “Kids and their parents come from all over for the chance to catch fish and learn about the sport of fishing and how hatcheries and fish stocking is important to fish and wildlife preservation. We are honored to be a partner in this endeavor.”

Corps of Engineers Park Rangers Spencer Bilbrey and Friends of Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery President Paul Boyce served as masters of ceremony and kept the festivities moving throughout the morning.

Overall, 215 children and 160 adults participated. People from as far away as Florida, Wisconsin and Ohio made the trip to Celina to get the chance to catch a rainbow trout.

“The fishing rodeo provides the region with a great opportunity to get the youth involved in the outdoors, said Dustin Boles, a former Corps employee, who attended. “My son had a great time and was lucky enough to catch a fish or two. Thank you to all the supporters who contributed to such a great event. We look forward to next year.”
Ten staff members from participating agencies, four volunteers, and six Friends Group members worked together to make this event a huge success.

The Friends of Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery distributed free hot dogs, and the Clay County Emergency Medical Service also assisted with the event.

Participants registered for random prize drawings which took place throughout the morning. One of the highlights of this year’s event was the use of a “kiddie pool” so that the younger anglers could take part. Expert face painters Teresa Nevans and Leigh Shaull were kept quite busy all morning.

“We would like to thank all of the area businesses and individuals who donated prizes, tackle, bait, drinks, advertising, and effort to this year’s Kids’ Fishing Rodeo,” Beason added.
