BURKESVILLE, Ky. (June 7, 2017) – Hendricks Creek Marina here on Dale Hollow Lake raised the “Clean Marina” flag today during a dedication ceremony recognizing the marina’s voluntary efforts to reduce water pollution and erosion in the Cumberland River watershed, and for promoting environmentally responsible marina and boating practices.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District implemented the Cumberland River Basin Clean Marina Partnership with its watershed partners, which include the Tennessee Valley Authority, Kentucky Wildlife Resources Agency, and Cumberland River Compact. The program is modeled after the Tennessee Valley Clean Marina initiative, which currently has 82 participating marinas and supports the National Clean Boating Campaign.
At the ceremony on the dock by the water, Dale Hollow Lake Resource Manager Stephen Beason, welcomed attendees, recognized partners and commended the Hendricks Creek Marina staff.
Maj. Christopher Burkhart, deputy district engineer of the Nashville District, praised the Brendel family for their work and dedication. Their dedication to clean water and becoming a ‘Clean Marina’ is very commendable. Hendricks Creek Marina on Dale Hollow Lake serves as a model for other marinas in the Cumberland River Basin in the certification process.”
Judge John Phelps, Cumberland County Judge Executive, also attended and praised the work to improve the facilities at Hendricks Creek Marina.
“This is a historic and beautiful day for Hendricks Creek Marina said Phelps,” I grew up on Dale Hollow Lake and have witnessed this family’s work and love for their community. They are a rock and cornerstone to our community. It’s an important and historic day for the Smiths and their staff to achieve the ‘Clean Marina’ status. Dale Hollow Lake is a piece of paradise in Burkesville, Kentucky. I know there are distinctive parts to achieve this status. That means a lot because there are several levels and stair steps they have to go through.”
During the process of achieving “Clean Marina” status, Hendricks Creek Marina’s owners signed a pledge card committing to the ideals of controlling pollution and erosion. Then the facility had to complete a clean marina checklist and develop an action plan to meet their goals.
The checklist is extensive, and contains specific requirements for sewage management; fuel management; solid waste and petroleum recycling and disposal; vessel operation, maintenance and repair; marina siting, design and maintenance; storm water management and erosion control; and public education and water safety.
According to Park Ranger Sondra Carmen, the marina has accomplished all checklist items and demonstrated a willingness to protect and preserve the water and environment at Dale Hollow Lake.
“Hendricks Creek has completed all the necessary requirements and excelled in proactive clean boating outreach with marina patrons and visitors,” Carmen said.
Before raising the clean marina flag, Diane Parks, chief of operations, Nashville District, presented a certificate, thanked the Brendels’ for their work in taking the initiative to achieve “Clean Marina” status and presented the “Clean marina” flag.
“This is about you and I get the dubious honor of passing this on,” said Parks. What the Brendel family has done is make Dale Hollow Lake a better place for the community, visitors and water users downstream of Dale Hollow Lake. We can see all the hard work you have here (at Hendricks Creek Marina) that impacts a much greater area,” said Parks.
Parks told the Brendels, “Your dedication to recycling, environment and keeping Dale Hollow clean speaks volumes and we are grateful for your commitment. You guys are to be commended for the work you’ve done in reaching this status.”
After raising the “Clean Marina” flag at the end of the dedication ceremony, Patty Brendel said she is thankful for her brother and partner working with her and keeping the family tradition going. She thanked the Hendricks Creek Marina staff for completing work done over the past six months to be certified.
“I’m so proud of our staff and how we’ve all taken a pledge to put together an environmental action plan and implement that into the marina,” said Brendel. Everyone that comes over that hill to this marina are family and we are going to continue to go above and beyond what is expected of us to continue to keep Dale Hollow Lake clean as possible and encourage everybody to keep it clean,” she said. “We could not have done this without the support of our staff and our crewmembers. They have worked extra hard to make every one of these requirements possible.
Hendricks Creek Marina is the first marina at Dale Hollow Lake on the Kentucky side of the Lake to achieve this designation. Hendricks Creek Marina was originally purchased by J. Fred Pace as Dale Hollow Lake was being built in 1950. Frank Brendel, Sr. purchased the current properties known as Hendricks Creek Fishing Camp, Inc. on September 18, 1953 from George Hardin.
In 1961, Frank Brendel Jr., and his wife Pat along with two of their children, came to Burkesville from Canton, Ohio to manage Hendricks Creek Fishing Camp, Inc. The Brendels’ added houseboats in the late 60's and early 70’s, added new slips and built their rental fleet to 36 – the largest fleet on the lake.
Currently, brother and sister, Frank and Patty manage the Hendricks Creek Resort and Marina. Hendricks Creek Resort offers 24 rental Houseboats, 7 Cottages, a Full Service Marina, a Ships' Store, and a 5,600 square-foot service center.
