FORT BENNING, Ga. – The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) competitive shooting teams work daily to be the best marksmen in the world. Here is a review of their accomplishments for the week ending May 22.

    Competitions

    Service Rifle

Soldiers from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) Service Rifle Team, competed in the 2017 Texas High-power Service Rifle State Championship, May 18-20 in Bastrop, Texas.

The championship included three, four-man match rifle teams from the USAMU. Team coaches included Sgt. 1st Class Shane Barnhart from Columbus, Ohio, Sgt. Joseph Peterson from Mobile, Alabama, and Sgt. 1st Class Robert Shoup from Dallas, Texas.
The AMU teams swept the podium with scores that were within six points of each other. Barnhart’s team placed first. Peterson’s team finished a close second only three points back. Shoup’s team came in third, only three points behind.

Sgt. Augustus Dunfey from Rumney, New Hampshire, led individual match events with a first place finish in the Overall Service Rifle Match.

Dunfey actually tied with teammate Spc. Daniel Lowe, a 2016 U.S. Olympian from Federal Way, Washington, but Dunfey prevailed by engaging more targets from the 600 yard mark. USAMU Soldiers took seven of the top 10 places in the match.

Lowe didn’t leave Texas empty-handed, however, as he won the Excellence in Competition (EIC) Match, earning his second consecutive gold badge in an EIC match this season.

Sgt. Ben Cleland from Sylvania, Ohio, won the Director’s Match at the event orchestrating another podium sweep for the USAMU Service Rifle Team. Lowe and Peterson finished second and third, respectively, in the match. Overall, the USAMU had 12 of the top 15 scores in the competition.

    Full-bore East Coast Nationals

Two additional Service Rifle Team members traveled to Creedmoor, North Carolina, May 14-22, to compete at the 2017 Sinclair International Full-bore East Coast Nationals.

Sgt. 1st Class Brandon Green from Covington, Louisiana, and Staff Sgt. Amanda Elsenboss from Waterbury, Connecticut, competed on a combined U.S. Nationals Team in the regional team event, helping set a new four-man team record that bested the previous top score by nine points.

Individually, Elsenboss finished seventh and Green placed ninth in the Full-bore Prone Match.

    Action Shooting Team

Spc. Jacob Hetherington from Prescott, Arizona, won his first national title at the 2017 United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Single Stack Nationals in Barry, Illinois, May 16-22.

A single stack match limits the number of rounds that can be in a magazine at any given time. Each competitor can only have eight rounds in the magazine and stages require anywhere from 10 to 30 rounds to complete.

Staff Sgt. John Browning from Griffin, Georgia placed sixth in the same match, giving the USAMU two of the top 10 finishers in the event.

    Breakneck Precision Rifle Series

Staff Sgt. Tyler Payne from Minneapolis, Minnesota competed in the Battle of the Breakneck Precision Rifle Series (PRS) Bolt Gun Match in Broadwater, Nebraska, May 18-22. Payne finished 66th out of 116 world-class marksmen.

    International Team

The USAMU International Rifle Team sent two Soldiers to compete in International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) events, May 1-15 in Europe.

Staff Sgt. George Norton from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Spc. Patrick Sunderman from Burnsville, Minnesota, competed in the 2017 Grand Prix of Liberation (GPoL) in Plzen, Czech Republic, May 3-8, followed by the International Shooting Competition of Hannover (ISCH) in Hannover, Germany, May 9-15.

Norton finished 15th out of 675 competitors in the 50-Meter Three-position Rifle Match at the GPoL competition, and placed 40th in the 50-Meter Prone Rifle Match. Sunderman finished in 62nd and 51st respectively in each match. It was his first competition of this caliber while with the USAMU.

At the ISCH event, which included 750 competitors from around the world, Norton placed seventh and Sunderman finished 10th in the 50-Meter, Three-position Rifle Match. In the 10-Meter Air Rifle Match, Norton came in seventh place, his best finish while in Europe, while Sunderman finished 23rd.

In the final match, the 50-Meter Prone Rifle Match, Norton placed 12th while Sunderman brought home a 22nd place result.
