NEW YORK — As a part of Fleet Week New York, crew members from the United States Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton and guests from the esteemed Broadway musical, Hamilton, Lexi Lawson (Eliza Hamilton) and Brandon Victor Dixon (Aaron Burr), honored Coast Guard founder, Alexander Hamilton, with a memorial wreath-laying ceremony at his grave at Trinity Church in New York City, Friday.

Alexander Hamilton's humble beginnings in America began in New York City where he attended King's College, now Columbia University. Hamilton was General George Washington's military aide de camp during the Revolutionary War and commanded the pivotal battalion charge at Yorktown forcing the British to surrender, effectively ending the war. In 1789, Hamilton became Secretary of Treasury and crafted the effort to create the Revenue Cutter Service, which later became the modem day U.S. Coast Guard.

Each of the Coast Guard’s National Security Cutters is classified as a “Legend-Class” cutter, which honor a person who was pivotal in making the Coast Guard the Service it is today. U.S. Coast Guard Cuter Hamilton (WMSL 753) is the fourth Legend-Class cutter and the sixth Coast Guard Cutter to bear Alexander Hamilton's name.

USCGC Hamilton is a 418-foot National Security Cutter (NSC) homeported in Charleston, South Carolina. The Legend-Class NSC is the centerpiece of the Coast Guard’s fleet, capable of executing the most challenging operations, including supporting maritime homeland security and defense missions. NSCs are the largest and most technologically advanced of the Coast Guard’s white-hulled cutters and are designed to provide better sea-keeping and higher sustained transit speeds, greater endurance, and range than any cutters that came before. NSCs have the ability to launch and recover small boats from astern, as well as aviation support facilities and a flight deck for helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles.

This week Cutter Hamilton made her inaugural voyage to New York City to be a part of Fleet Week festivities. USCGC Hamilton is open for free public tours daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pier 92 in Manhattan for the duration of Fleet Week, through Tuesday, May 30, 2017.
