ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam - Five recruits joining the Air Force Reserve recited the oath of the enlistment, April 29, at the world’s largest Latte Stone, the Latte of Freedom monument, Hagatna, Guam.
New recruits are encouraged to choose unique locations to enlist, as it commemorates the moment they became Reserve Citizen Airmen with the 624th Regional Support Group. The 624th RSG is the largest Air Force Reserve presence in the Pacific. The Group has four units located on Hickam Field, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, and two units on Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.
The Latte of Freedom is a giant latte stone standing at 80 feet tall with walls 14 feet thick overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The Latte Stones were used by the ancient Chamorros for the foundation of their homes.
“I suggested the Latte of Freedom for this enlistment because it symbolizes the foundation and culture of the Chamorro people,” said Tech. Sgt. Michael Shinohara, of Hagatna, Guam, 624th RSG line recruiter.
The 624th RSG provides nearly 700 combat-ready Airmen who specialize in aerial port, aeromedical support and civil engineering operations for worldwide employment, promoting peace and stability in the Asia Pacific Region and throughout the world.
Shinohara has enlisted recruits all over Guam and Hawaii.
“I have done enlistments at Tumon Bay at sunset in Guam, the Courtyard of Heroes at Hickam, Aulani lagoon at Ko'olina, or even on an aircraft,” said Shinohara. “Most recruits expect to enlist in an office, but I want to make it memorable. I do this because I care about the people that I recruit. This is a way to show our new Airmen that we’ll go the distance to make sure they are successful.”
Potential recruits living in Guam have the opportunity to join the 624th RSG staff, 44th Aerial Port Squadron, or the 624th Aerospace Medicine Flight.
The 44th APS’s expertise is in air terminal operations, which includes aircraft loading, cargo processing and inspecting, passenger services, aircraft fleet services and aerial port command and control.
The 624th AMDF provides medical support to Air Force Reserve organizations to ensure wartime readiness.
