NEW YORK – A group Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 202 and Underwater Construction Team (UCT) One helped with revitalization projects in Brooklyn for low to moderate income families in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity New York City (Habitat NYC) during 2017 Fleet Week New York (FWNY), May 25.

The Seabees seized the opportunity to hone their skills by framing walls and installing drywall, while also filling the families with the pride of homeownership.

“We maintain our skills and knowledge from the work we do on these homes,” said Builder 2nd Class Michael Case, NMCB 202. “It’s the same type of work that we do when we are overseas.”

The work that the volunteers provided not only helped the families, but also made an impact on the local community.

“My job is focused mainly underwater, but I’m still a builder,” said Builder 2nd Class Estephan Lopez, UCT One. “… under water is the place for me to be, I love it, but everyone with Habitat for Humanity is very nice and very helpful. They’re just a motivating group of people. I’m happy and excited to be here.”

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Navy Construction Battalion, and the team was in celebratory mood while maintaining their professional work ethic.

“We’re excited to be here celebrating the Seabee’s 75th birthday during Fleet Week New York,” exclaimed Lt. John Daly of Fleet Forces Command, “The city of New York has been great to us and we’re happy to be working with Habitat for Humanity to give back to this community.”
Habitat NYC, a non-profit organization, transforms lives and communities by building and preserving affordable homes with hard-working families in need – and by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing. With the help of thousands of volunteers each year, Habitat NYC builds and preserves homes for ownership by low-to moderate income families throughout the five boroughs, creating a stronger and more united New York.
FWNY, now in its 29th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
