NORFOLK, VA – Sea service members, including U.S. Navy Seabee personnel, will help Habitat for Humanity New York City (Habitat NYC) on revitalization projects in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens as part of a Fleet Week New York (FWNY) community service project, May 25-26.
Military personnel will assist with one home building project in Brooklyn; three revitalization projects in Jamaica, Queens; and a Manhattan community center in conjunction with “A Brush with Kindness” project.
On Thursday, May 25 at the Brooklyn site, service members will work alongside Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and senior staff.
“I’m proud to have members of my Brooklyn Borough Hall team participating in Habitat NYC’s weekend of service during Fleet Week,” said Adams. “One of my top priorities is expanding access to quality, affordable housing for all Brooklynites. Physically putting the nail on the hammer to build homes in underserved Brownsville, a community facing endemic poverty and high foreclosure rates, is the kind of service we should all be doing to create ‘One Brooklyn.’ A home is a core part of a person’s dignity and identity, and I hope these new units will serve as a fresh start for the families that will call it just that one day.”
Habitat NYC, a non-profit organization, transforms lives and communities by building and preserving affordable homes with hard-working families in need – and by uniting all New Yorkers around the cause of affordable housing. With the help of thousands of volunteers each year, Habitat NYC builds and preserves homes for ownership by low-to moderate income families throughout the five boroughs, creating a stronger and more united New York. Now in its 29th year, FWNY is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen.
