The Department of Defense emphasizes the importance of sexual assault awareness and prevention throughout the military because of issues in today’s society and the enduring commitment to ensuring equal opportunity in the workplace. MARFORCOM introduced a new method of reaching its personnel by welcoming Domitzr.
Domitzr is known for his interactive and humorous delivery to reach audiences in a more dynamic way. The theme, “Can I Kiss You?” comes from his book title. It depicts an informative, entertaining journey exposing the stereotypical flaws of body language, the thrills of conversation, the serious impact of wrongful behavior, and how to expect and offer respect to one another throughout all stages of courtship and existing relationships, and most important, establishing consent.
Domitzr began his journey as a sexual assault spokesman after learning his sister was a victim of rape. He provided a clearer understanding on consent and raising awareness to many issues surrounding sexual assault, prevention, respect and trust. Using humorous anecdotes, he discussed both proper and improper ways for individuals to act during scenarios service members may find themselves in on a daily basis to include liberty outings or a quiet night at home with a spouse.
Lt. Gen. John E. Wissler, Commander, MARFORCOM, spoke to the audience during the class, saying Marines need to be able to trust that person to their right and left and that trust is not established on the battlefield, but is earned in garrison. This class added to that statement, capturing the importance of taking care of one another on the battlefield, at work and on liberty.
This training also focused on encouraging service members to be brave enough to stand up against sexual assault.
“Mr. [Domitzr] had such a unique way of addressing the issues the world faces with sexual assault. In the beginning of the class, he described a scenario, and asked the audience what we’d do if we were witness to that type of situation. We all admitted we wouldn’t get involved in their business,” said Sgt. Leslie Avila, admin clerk, MARFORCOM. “By the end of his class, I had a new mindset. Sexual assault is more common than I ever imagined and it doesn’t just happen in the military, it happens all over the world. As Marines, we should take care of our own, but as human beings, we should always look out for one another. I won’t just sit back anymore. I will intervene.”
