FORT WORTH, Texas -- When Col. Calvin C. Hudson II sees Tropic Lightning, it means family is near.
Hudson was on a site visit Friday to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects along the Trinity River Corridor in Dallas when he suddenly asked the van driver to halt. The Fort Worth District commander spotted the 25th Infantry Division insignia on a car window. It's the same Tropic Lightning shoulder sleeve insignia Hudson wears.
An older gentleman with an Army black beret was getting into the car. Hudson made a quick exit from the van for a handshake and a quick visit.
Like Hudson, the former infantryman had served in Hawaii, but long ago. The Vietnam War-era vet had retired before Hudson entered Ranger School. The vet spoke with pride about the Army -- and how it had gotten even better since he served.
Impromptu family reunion. The new face of today's Army lights up a Tropic Lightning vet. Soldier for Life.
