Whether a second lieutenant fresh from the United States Air Force Academy, or a captain settled in the workplace, Schriever’s junior officers all have a chance to congregate and learn from each other through the Company Grade Officer’s Council.

“The purpose of the CGO Council is to function as a social and professional organization established to enhance morale, esprit de corps and cooperation between members,” said 2nd Lt. Amy Gillilan, CGO Council president.

2nd Lt. Michael Kilbourn, CGO council treasurer, said the council gives junior officers, especially those newly commissioned, access to a network of varying perspectives.

“Getting to interact with others in various environments and career fields, you get to bounce ideas of one another, helping form a better outlook,” said Kilbourn.

The CGO Council runs similar functions to other Schriever professional development organizations for enlisted service members, adding a unique focus on the officer side of the spectrum, said Gillilan, herself prior enlisted.

“The council caters to officers by providing professional development, service and morale events to foster growth, development and mentorship,” she said. “Although there are many similarities between the enlisted organizations and the officer corps, the CGO Council allows for the development of young officers in addition to providing opportunities for leadership.”

Kilbourn, also prior enlisted, said the council’s prior enlisted leadership core is a critical asset to CGO Council members.

“Just because some of us have been in for 10 or more years doesn’t mean we know everything,” said Kilbourn. “But it does mean we have experience as members of other organizations. We’re all here to learn how to be consummate company grade officers, but we can simultaneously aide others in how to come together as a team and work toward a common goal.”

Leadership opportunities include chances to organize and volunteer at events on and off base, such as Peterson Air Force Base’s Women’s panels, working to serve food to Airmen on crew shifts during the holidays, directing promotion ceremonies and hosting fundraisers. The council will also help organize the Schriever Diversity Day event this summer.

“Diversity Day is one particular event our organization is heavily involved with,” said Kilbourn. “Diversity and inclusion is huge, it’s an aspect we are all looking forward to improving.”

As the council’s new president, Gillilan said she plans to further the benefits and opportunities available for company grade officers to learn, as well as deepen the impact they make on base. She said an important part of implementing her plans is to enhance the team centric environment the council fosters.

“My goals for the council are two fold, serve the community and provide mentorship to others,” said Gillilan. “To begin tackling these goals, connection as a council and as a team is essential.”

These goals are part of the new future set forth by CGO Council’s newly elected leadership, a future which looks promising, said Kilbourn.

“We have people coming on board who are passionate about personal and professional development,” said Kilbourn. “We are all looking forward to making the organization even better than it already is.”
