The theme of the observance was “Honoring Trailblazing Women Who Have Paved the Way for Future Generations.”

Young started her presentation by stating “I don’t want to get anything because I am a female. I want what I get because I earned it.” The mayor spoke about one of her previous jobs as a janitor at Camp Robinson in the mid 1980’s. “I always talk to the janitor. I’ve been there” said Young. “I have graduated college and have a degree but what I am on the inside is who I really am.”

She went on to talk about her campaign and term in office as mayor. Recalling a profound statement made by her parents as she was growing up, she said “an honest days work provides an opportunity.”

Young then spoke about her “inner circle”, and made mention of one of her friends that has helped her tremendously.

“Amy Sanders, the woman who our library is named after, hired me. She was 18 months out from retirement and today she is 92 years old,” said Young.

She added that when she started thinking about running for office in 2007, she went over to Sanders’ house to speak to her about it. Young then added that Sanders is in her circle and said “she has my best interests in mind.”

According to Young, Sanders helped her run a very successful campaign. “Everyone knew that Mrs. Amy was a big help to me. She has been a great asset to me and she is one of my greatest supporters” Young added.

Sherwood’s mayor continued by saying that Sanders is “much older than I am but I still have a lot of confidence in her.”

Concluding her presentation for Women’s History Month, Young stated “It is people like that (Sanders), that I allow into my inner circle because she knows me for who I am, not by my position.”
