FORT LEE, Va. – A team of ten U.S. Army Culinary Specialists from 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) competed in the 42nd Annual Military Culinary Arts Competitive Training Event (MCACTE) which started at the McLaughlin Gym in Ft. Lee on March 4th and ended Friday March 10th 2017 with an award ceremony in which the team took home medals.

The annual MCACTE is the largest American Culinary Federation sanctioned competition in the United States which expands operational readiness and showcases military culinarians across the US Armed Forces and International Partners. Over two hundred military chefs from twenty-two different states and countries combined, displayed their talents in the competition.

The Fort Eustis team trained for 7 weeks leading up to the event. During the competition they competed in the Individual category – Practical and Contemporary Hot-Food Cooking – where they only had 15 minutes to setup, 1 hour to prepare the dish, and 10 minutes to serve the food to 3 of the judges. The judges awarded points and the points were used for the medal scoring, 70-79.9 points for bronze, 80-89.9 silver, 90-99.9 gold, and 100 points gold with distinction. Some of the other categories had additional awards including college scholarships, plaques and trophies.

The guest speaker for the award ceremony Brig. Gen. Rodney D. Fogg, the Army’s Quartermaster General and commandant of the QM School, began by saying “This an outstanding event.” He went on to say “Ultimately what happens is the confidence of our services member increases and their confidence and competence increases. They take that back to wherever they came from and it improves readiness across our military.” “That is what we are trying to do and that is what this all about.” “Ultimately potential changes their lives. They get out of the Army or whatever service they are in and they use these skills.” He finished by thanking all the participants.

After Brig. Gen. Fogg gave his opening speech the awards began. The Fort Eustis team took home three silver medals, and six bronze medals, nine medals in all. After the ceremony the SFC Adam J. Maguire Fort Eustis’s Resolute Café NCOIC, and supervisor to the Fort Eustis team, said “Fort Eustis' culinary team is the absolute best, with minimal time to train they overcame many obstacles and brought home 9 medals. These skills will be passed on in the Resolute Cafe so if you are not eating here you are missing out, come see what a wonderful job our culinary specialist do.”
