S.I.C.K. program designed to alleviate medical care process

The program will help expedite medication access for patients suffering from short-term medical issues.

“The S.I.C.K. program allows patients who have a primary care provider at the 30th Medical Group to request over-the-counter medications to treat minor illnesses directly from the pharmacy without making an appointment with a medical provider,” said Maj. Benjamin Crandall, 30th Medical Support Squadron pharmacy flight commander.

Patients must be enrolled with a primary care provider from the 30th MDG to be eligible to participate in the program. Potential patients must complete a training review and quiz before obtaining their enrollment.

“Eligible patients will be required to review training slides and complete a one-time quiz prior to being enrolled,” said Crandall. “The slides and quiz are currently located at the pharmacy where patients desiring to use the program should choose the S.I.C.K. program option on the pharmacy kiosks to check in. Additionally, the slides and quiz will also be available online.”

Once the quiz is complete, patients will be issued a 30th MDG S.I.C.K. program card, which will not expire as long as the patient remains eligible for the program.

“Once a patient has their program card, they simply need to check in on the pharmacy kiosk, show the S.I.C.K. program card and complete the S.I.C.K. program form,” said Maj. Stephen Edstrom, 30th MDG chief of medical staff. “Patients may request up to three medications per family member per calendar month, but each family member will require a separate form completed. Patients will be responsible for following the directions on the over-the-counter package labeling and should not deviate from recommended dosing regimens or age restrictions. Medications that the patient orders will be entered into the patient’s electronic medical record.”

While the 30th MDG aims to improve short-term care, patients suffering from more serious medical conditions are urged to continue their regular clinic appointments.

“The goal of this program is to improve overall access to medical care and allow our patients with minor ailments that can be self-treated to receive faster care,” said Edstrom. “Patients who receive over-the-counter medications for chronic or recurring conditions should continue to schedule appointments with their medical providers.”
