Joint Operations Training Prepares National Guard

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md.- The Joint Task Force-District of Columbia, Joint Reception Staging Onward Integration processed 1,400 Airman and Soldiers in support of the 58th Presidential Inauguration, Jan. 17-19, 2017.

The JRSOI is a process of accounting for personnel and equipment needed to accomplish mission requirements while ensuring safe and effective functionality of all assets moving into and returning from the mission.

"Setting the Task Force is the first step of the long process of establishing and aligning operations, activities, events to achieve our mission," said Lt. Col. Sandy Smith, JRSOI officer in charge.

Over the course of three days, a joint unit of Army, Air Force and civilian personnel will have successfully processed 1,400 service members. The Soldiers and Airmen traveled to the District from all over the country to support the peaceful transfer of power.

"We lead personnel through the process of validating their readiness before moving to the mission; making sure that all administrative needs are being met so as not to reduce the overall effectiveness of the team," said Staff Sergeant Crystal Mitchell, 113th executive assistant.

Each station includes personnel accountability, medical, assignments, logistics and communications.

“The in-processing was fast and smooth,” said Staff Sergeant Lacey Hunt, human resources specialist, Mississippi Army National Guard. “ I’m excited to get out and support and be a part of history.”

The JTF-DC included 7,500 Guardsmen from 44 states, 3 territories (Guam, Puerto Rico & the U.S. Virgin Islands) and the District of Columbia are providing critical support to people attending inaugural events. National Guard support to presidential inaugurations dates to April 30, 1789, when local militia members (today’s National Guard) joined the U.S. Army and revolutionary war veterans to form an honor detail and escort Gen. George Washington to his inauguration ceremony in New York City from Mount Vernon, Va.
