As aircraft takeoff and touchdown during Checkered Flag 17-1, the need for logistical support is paramount. Without the professionals of the 325th Logistics Readiness Squadron, this large-scale exercise could not be possible.
Checkered Flag is a large-force exercise that gives several legacy and 5th-generation aircraft the opportunity to practice combat training together from a simulated deployed environment.
“The overarching mission of the 325th LRS during Checkered Flag is to provide unmatched logistics support to all the units participating in the exercise,” said Capt. Christopher Santangelo, 325th LRS commander. “We handle all inbound and outbound cargo over the road and through the air while also providing transportation support and maintenance to the units during the exercise. Upon exercise completion, we coordinate the redeployment of all personnel and their assets back to their home station.”

Santangelo believes the 325th LRS is uniquely organized to support and complete its mission in a swift and unified manner. The supply, fuels, deployment, distribution, and vehicle maintenance flights of 325th LRS are synced together to ensure uninterrupted support 24/7 throughout sortie generation and mission sustainment, he added.
During the exercise, the 325th LRS had an increase of vehicles that needed to be provided. The squadron provided 138 rental vehicles, three vehicle recalls from units and 11 organic U-Drive-Its (UDIs). During normal operations the 325th LRS generally lends out approximately 15 vehicles to installation units. This ensured all visiting units transportation needs were met.
“The vehicle rental process was centralized within the Vehicle Management Flight through the Fleet Management and Analysis office allowing for a one-stop-shop for all units taking part in Checkered Flag,” Santangelo said. “Additionally, the Deployment and Distribution Flight recently reworked the cargo flow in their receiving warehouse. The changes allow for full utilization of six docks and a large cargo staging yard which enables Checkered Flag units to have access to their equipment within minutes of arrival at Tyndall.”

Another piece to the puzzle within the 325th LRS is the fuel depot, which provided approximately 1.84 million gallons of fuel to the 1,312 aircraft and government vehicles.
“The 325th LRS Fuels Flight is expecting to dispense close to 2 million gallons of jet fuel with additives to over 90 aircraft, fueling them more than 1,300 times during the duration of Checkered Flag 17-1,” Santangelo said. “Additionally, we anticipate to dispense roughly 5,200 gallons of gasoline unleaded uegular and 4,400 gallons of diesel to government vehicles via our two service stations.”

Members of the 325th LRS leadership from across the base have touted the work their unit and its Airmen have done during the exercise.

“We are firing on all cylinders during Checkered Flag,” said Tech. Sgt. Matthew Foote, 325th LRS fuels information service center section chief. “Our mission is to supply our resources across the spectrum. There isn’t a section that we don’t touch on this base. Our home station and TDY Airmen that have come in are definitely going with the one team one fight mindset. I couldn’t be more proud of the work they have been doing.

As Checkered Flag 17-1 comes to a close, the professionals of the 325th LRS will continue to support the Tyndall mission of training and projecting unrivaled combat airpower and the larger Air Force Rapid Global Mobility effort.
