LAHAD DATU, Malaysia, (Nov. 10, 2016) – Members of the Malaysian and United States armed forces will participate in a bilateral training exercise – “Tiger Strike 2016” – in Malaysia from November 9-13, 2016.

Tiger Strike 16, formally known as Malaysia – United States Amphibious Exercise, places an emphasis on increasing combat readiness and conducting amphibious operations within the context of stability and security operations.

“Tiger Strike is an opportunity for U.S. Marines and Sailors to interact with soldiers from the Malaysian Armed Forces and share best training practices across a wide variety of military skills,” said Col. Clay C. Tipton, commanding officer, 11th MEU. “These bilateral exercises allow our militaries to increase combat readiness and enhance coordination and communication between forces, which are important steps to maintaining regional security and stability.”

Partnered training with the Malaysian Armed Forces includes jungle survival, combat rubber raiding craft usage, non-lethal weapons, Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, helicopter loading and offloading drills, landing zone security/control, combat service support, medical capabilities exchange, operational planning, shipboard familiarization aboard the USS Makin Island (LHD 8), amphibious rehearsals with ship-to-shore connectors, and execution of an amphibious landing.

Additionally, both militaries’ medical personnel will conduct a bilateral medical civil affairs project at a local clinic near Lahad Datu.

The exercise will include approx. 300 soldiers from the 7th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment and approx. 300 U.S. Marines and Sailors from the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group/11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The U.S. military and Malaysia Armed Forces have partnered in counter-terrorism operations since 1985 and have participated in numerous exercises over the years.

Tiger Strike 16 is a realistic, relevant, and challenging exercise that brings service members closer and improves both nations’ ability to work bilaterally, which better prepares both nations to provide regional security and stability.

The MKI ARG/11th MEU provides senior U.S. military leadership and coalition partners with a flexible force which can rapidly respond to contingencies and crises within a region. With ships, aircraft, troops, and logistical equipment, the ARG/MEU is a self-contained and self-sustained task force capable of conducting everything from combat operations to providing humanitarian assistance.

The MKI ARG/11th MEU arrived in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) late October. While in the 7th Fleet AOR, the MKI ARG/11th MEU will conduct a series of theater security cooperation engagements, like Tiger Strike, to strengthen ties and increase communication and coordination with allies and partners in the region. In addition to Makin Island, the MKI ARG includes the amphibious transport dock ship USS Somerset (LPD 25), and the dock landing ship USS Comstock (LSD 45).

The 11th MEU is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force comprised of a ground combat element, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marines; an aviation combat element, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163 (Reinforced); a combat logistics element, Combat Logistics Battalion 11; and a command element.
