JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – One Army Reserve senior leader honored Veterans this weekend by attending several Veterans Day events throughout communities in Philadelphia and western New Jersey.

Brig. Gen. Jose´ R. Burgos, deputy commanding general of the Army Reserve’s 99th Regional Support Command headquartered here, kicked off his Veterans Day weekend by speaking to cadets, service members, families, educators and community leaders at Drexel University’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Hall of Fame induction ceremony Nov. 11.

“Today, all across our country – in town halls, city squares and events such as this – we celebrate and honor our nation’s Veterans for their devotion, patriotism, selfless service and sacrifice on behalf of us all,” Burgos said. “It is their loyalty to their country and their own great courage which have made us what we are today, and what we’ve been for more than two centuries: The world’s indispensable nation … the land of the free and the home of the brave … a beacon of hope in an oft-troubled world.”

Burgos’ next stop was Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center, where he led a Veterans Chat with school children, educators, parents and community leaders Nov. 11.

“This day belongs to all our Veterans, just as it belongs to the past generations of patriots who came before,” he said.

Burgos wrapped up his Veterans Day weekend by speaking at Millcreek Park in Willingboro, New Jersey, following the town’s Veterans Day parade Nov. 12.

“America must ensure that the freedoms our Veterans helped to preserve, and the nation they fought to defend, remains safe and secure for future generations of Americans,” he said. “We do this in the Army Reserve by building and deploying units that are trained, manned and equipped to win the nation’s wars, and also stand ready to support our communities in the homeland during times of need.”

Besides helping Army Reserve units prepare for missions overseas, the 99th RSC plays a key role in providing Defense Support of Civil Authorities in times of natural disaster, such as in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

“Today’s Army Reserve is the most capable, combat-ready and lethal federal reserve force in our nation’s history, and it is our Veterans upon whose shoulders this awesome force has been built,” Burgos said.
